Nit, Egg, and the Other: Three Natural and Effective Solutions to Kill Lice

It’s possible that your child will contract head lice at some point; it is estimated that six to twelve million children in between the ages of three and eleven get head lice every year. Getting rid of these little blood suckers can make you cry just as much as it makes your child cry, if not more. Many parents shy away from over-the-counter lice treatments because of the high levels of pesticides they contain; luckily, there are several at-home remedies you can use that are safe and effective. Tea Tree Oil Tea tree oil is one of the best and most effective solutions when it comes to eliminating lice at home. Not only is this oil an natural insecticide, it also contains terpinen. Terpinen is an anti-bacterial that is known for killing lice. Using this oil will also help soothe scratches on the scalp from itching fingers. Mix one tablespoon of tea tree oil and one ounce of your regular shampoo together. Completely saturate your child’s hair and work it until it comes to a nice lather. Cover your child’s hair with a plastic shower cap for forty-five minutes. After the time is up, begin the process of removing the bugs with a lice comb. Tea tree oil also works on the eggs by undoing the glue that sticks them to the shaft of the hair. Onions Another safe and effective home solution for lice removal is onion. Onions are full of sulfur, which burns lice at the site. To remove the nits as well, add a little olive oil to the mix. Like the tea tree oil, olive oil will remove the glue that holds the eggs to the hair. Place six onions and one-fourth cup of olive oil in a blender and mix until it turns into a paste. Massage the paste into your child’s hair, paying special attention to the crown of the head and behind the ears. These are the hot spots where lice like to hang out. Place a shower cap over your child’s hair for two hours. After the two hours is up, rinse your child’s hair and break out the lice comb. Vinegar When it comes to the natural enemies of head lice, vinegar is at the top of the list. Vinegar has high levels of acid, which is very toxic for the little blood suckers. It also destroys the nits by making […]

4 Tips For Using Chamois Cream Effectively

Cycling is great exercise, but it can also leave your rear end a little sore if you’re not careful. Chamois cream, a moisturizing product that’s meant to be applied to your sensitive private region, can help prevent this soreness. Not only does it reduce friction as you’re riding, but it also has antibacterial ingredients to help prevent infections. It’s important, however, that you use chamois cream properly in order to receive the maximum benefits. Use a generous amount. Chamois cream is not meant to be “rubbed in” to your skin like lotion. You need to apply enough that a decent layer remains on the surface of your skin — its this layer that will help reduce friction. A tablespoon is a good estimate, but everybody is different, so you might need to do a little experimenting. You really can’t over-apply chamois cream, so when in doubt, add a little bit more. There should still be some cream on the surface even after your ride. After you use it a few times, you’ll get a better sense of just how much you need. Apply the cream to your bike short pads, too. After you’re done applying the cream to your body, apply a layer to the padding of your bike shorts, too. This will keep the padding from just absorbing all of the cream you applied to your body. Rub the cream into the padding, and make sure you coat the entire padded area evenly. Wash your shorts promptly after laundering. Since the chamois cream does get absorbed into the padding of the shorts, you need to be very careful to wash your shorts after each ride. Otherwise, the cream will build up in the padding over time and begin harboring bacteria and fungi, which may actually make your soreness worse rather than better. Experiment with different chamois creams if one is not effective for you. Different brands of chamois cream contain slightly different ingredients. If one does not offer you adequate protection, or if it causes some irritation, try a different brand or a different formula by the same brand. You might have to find a few before you find the perfect chamois cream for your needs, but once you find it, your rides will be far more comfortable. Chamois cream is a part of the cycling routine that you don’t want to skip. Follow the tips above, and your […]

5 Mole Changes That Could Indicate Melanoma

If you regularly enjoy time in the sun, you may be concerned about developing melanoma. Melanoma is a type of cancer that begins in melanin-producing cells of your body. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its brown or tan coloration. Thus, during times of sun exposure, melanin produces the pigment that gives you a suntan. If a melanoma begins to develop, it is important to receive prompt medical care. Melanoma is often confirmed during a cancer screening. However, it is important for you to know the signs of melanoma so that it can be caught early. Melanoma usually responds well to treatment in the early stages. In addition, melanoma, if treated early, is not likely to spread. The early signs of melanoma are often changes to moles. Read on to learn more about the structure of your skin and how to catch cancer symptoms. Your Skin’s Structure Your skin is basically comprised of three layers. The first layer is the epidermis, which is the outermost layer that contains the melanin-producing cells that are called melanocytes. These cells can develop into melanoma. The layers beneath the epidermis include the dermis, which contains the sweat glands, nerves, hair shafts, and blood vessels. The deepest layer, which is called the subcutis, includes the fat needed to keep your body warm and protected. Since you can easily perceive the epidermis, your observation is the first line of defense against cancer. Lopsided Moles Most moles are harmless, but some of these skin growths can develop into melanoma. If a mole is symmetrical, it is not likely a melanoma. However, if two sides of a mole do not match, it may be a sign of cancer. Uneven Edges If a mole has uneven edges, it may be malignant. Most moles that are benign have even, circular borders. However, a melanoma can have raised, scalloped, and uneven edges. Color Variations If a mole has many different shade variations, it could indicate a problem. A benign mole is usually a single color. A melanoma may have various hues, such as black, white, or red. Large Size If a mole’s size is larger then the diameter of a normal pencil eraser, it could be an indication of cancer. Changes If a mole seems to be evolving or growing, it may be cancerous. The shape, size, and color of a benign mole usually stay the same. If you suspect that […]

The Three Main Types Of Hair Extensions

Whatever your reason for getting hair extensions, you should know what you are getting into before you move forward. You might hear different salons touting a certain type of extension as the best. The question to ask in this situation is what type of extension the salon offers. If they only offer the type of extension they tout as the best, this may mean that they did not have the money or resources to send stylists to receive training in all types of extensions. Rather than just trust that a salon knows the best type of extension to get, you should do some investigating on your own to find out what the pros and cons of each type really is.  Tape-in One of the most common types of extensions is the tape-in. These are applied close to the scalp and the extension comes as a strip of hair attached to a piece of adhesive tape. This tape is placed on the hair right next to the scalp. Tape-in extensions are easy to apply and look good when applied properly. Good quality tape-in extensions can be reapplied up to three times, which gives you good value for your money. There is some risk, however, of having the adhesive wear out.  Fusion Fusion extensions come in little bundles that must be fused to the hair. There are two types of fusion used. Hot fusion extensions must be heated before they will adhere to the hair. Cold fusion extensions use ultra-sonic waves to activate the adhesive. In either case, once the extensions are applied, they cannot be adjusted. This means that as your hair grows, the attachment point will be further away from your scalp, which may make the extensions more noticeable. To avoid noticeable extensions, you will need to have the extensions removed and replaced.  Micro Beads As the name suggest, micro-bead extensions consist of a bundle of hair attached to a tiny metal bead. Special tools are used to attach the extension to the hair near the scalp. Because micro-beads do not use an adhesive, they can be adjusted as your hair grows. In other words, your stylist can remove the bead and move it closer to your scalp. This should save on cost since you get more use from the same extension.  In terms of quality, you want an extension that is not noticeable. If you plan on leaving your […]

Want To Grow A Beard Your Boss Will Accept? Here Are A Few Tips

Whether to have a beard or not is a personal preference. While some may say that having facial hair is on its way out, others are still striving for that “perfect beard.” The thing that most men will agree on is that if you are going to have a beard, don’t just quit shaving and have the “lazy” look, you want a beard that shows you take care of yourself. If your facial hair is neat and gives you an air of authority instead of looking like you spent the past week bar hopping, your boss may be less likely to demand you shave. To get the right look, here are a few tips. Starting the Growth It is a good idea to wait until you have some time off to stop shaving. When you first stop, and for a few days afterward, you are going to look scruffy and unkempt. If you have a week, or, at least, an extra-long weekend to get things started you will be able to see how your facial hair grows. This way, you can determine the best style for your natural growth. You may have bald spots or areas where the hair comes in less dense than others. This will determine which styles you can choose from and not look silly or scraggly.   Keep a Nice Neck and Cheek Line You do not want to leave hairs on your neck, you need to note where your neck ends and where the underside of your face starts. Many men shave too much off the underside of their chin, giving the appearance of a chin strap. While this is fine if that is the style you are going for, or if you cannot grow hair there sufficiently, a full beard covers the horizontal area, stopping at the vertical area. While you do not need to have a severe cheek line, you do not want hair stragglers. Remove any that are causing an uneven line up to your sideburns. The line should appear to be natural, but neat.  Keep the Hair Trimmed You decide how long you want the beard and then keep it trimmed to that. Hair grows unevenly, new ones are popping out all the time. Stragglers give a patchy, slovenly look that will make people think you do not care about your appearance. How you look to your boss and clients is […]

3 Ways To Boost Your Business As A Makeup Artist

As a makeup artist, you can spend countless hours finding your next gig. When you want to expand your artistry and find more ways to land clients and more reliable sources of income, you need to incorporate more services. Add Consulting Work Instead of only using your talents to apply makeup for special occasions or photo shoots, incorporate in-person and virtual consulting into your services. There are many people who feel intimidated by makeup and simply want some guidance or coaching on colors and application. As part of your in-person package, you may want to offer clients the opportunity to meet at a pre-selected store to help them pick out foundation that should match their skin tone and various other makeup products that should complement them. Virtual consultations can be difficult to perform, since it is nearly impossible to help clients find foundation and concealer colors without seeing them in person. However, using a video chat platform can help you answer some of their questions and steer them in the right direction for their next visit to the store. You can also ask your client to be color-matched at a local makeup counter before their consultation to give you a general idea of their skin tone and undertone. Incorporate Skin Care The base for any great makeup look is good skin care. Consider offering advice to your clients about how they can improve their skin care. You might even consider investing in your own skin care products by creating special formulations or branding private label skin care products you enjoy. Promote products you use to improve the look and texture of your own skin, so you can give your clients recommendations based on experience. If you do not have a specific skin concern, but would like to find an effective product, find friends and family who are willing to try out the products and report their results. Although it can be time-consuming to find the right combination of products you trust enough to promote to your clients, your clients will appreciate the opportunity to have comprehensive services that address their skin beyond makeup. Find Partners Find business partners who offer different services than your own and create package deals you can offer to clients. For example, if you can find a stylist who is willing to partner with you, consider offering a makeover package. Not only is the business partnership […]

Answers To Common Questions About Stretch Marks

The skin is the largest organ in the body, and it is also the most visible. Unfortunately, there can be a number of cosmetic problems that a person’s skin can encounter. Stretch marks can be a particularly common issue for a person to experience, and it is important to understand this condition so that you can better understand how to treat it and avoid it in the future. To this end, you might benefit from having the following stretch mark questions and concerns addressed. What Will Cause Stretch Marks To Form? Stretch can form following any period of rapid growth or weight gain. This occurs because the fat deposits and muscles can grow more quickly than the skin, which can result in the skin stretching, leaving red or purple marks. Additionally, this problem may also be caused by cosmetic procedures that involve adding implants to the body. While some people may be highly prone to developing stretch marks, others may seem to be very resistant to this issue. This should not be surprising, given that each person’s body chemistry and genetics can cause their skin to be more or less elastic. For those that are particularly susceptible to this condition, there are stretch mark creams that can be used to help individuals enrich and fortify the skin so that it will be better able to stretch to accommodate the changing shape of the body. How Can You Have Stretch Marks Removed? For those that have had the misfortune of developing extremely noticeable stretch marks, there are a number of treatments that may be utilized. Unfortunately, there are some people that may assume surgical options are the only effective method of treating this issue, but there are other options available. In addition to being a preventative measure, stretch mark creams can help skin heal from this problem by providing it with the nutrients that it needs. While these creams may take several weeks to show noticeable results, this can be an effective alternative for those that are wanting to avoid surgery. To determine the best option for your needs, you should speak with an experienced dermatologist because they will be able to accurately gauge the severity of the stretch marks, which will allow them to recommend the most effective treatment option. Developing stretch marks can make you extremely self-conscious. Sadly, it is common for people to be relatively uninformed about these […]

What Are Dermal Fillers?

When you aren’t happy with your appearance, you might turn to cosmetic procedures. One procedure that is popular is to get dermal fillers. Dermal fillers are a type of wrinkle fillers that are injected into different parts of your face. They fill the wrinkles and creases in your face to improve your overall appearance and make you look more youthful. What Fillers Help With Dermal fillers are meant to fill wrinkles and creases in your skin, though they can also fill in different shallow areas of your face. If you are starting to age, you might find that your cheeks are starting to sink in slightly. This can cause your face to look shallow and really show your age. Dermal fillers are a great way to give you cheeks again and smooth out your face. They also help to smooth out other areas of your face, along with helping to reduce the appearance of scars and give your lips a little volume. Just remember dermal fillers fill in areas of your skin, while treatments like Botox simply relax the muscles in your face. What Dermal Fillers Can’t Do There are many things that dermal fillers can help with, but they aren’t a cure-all cosmetic treatment. Since it is a non-surgical procedure, it is not going to help lift any area of your skin. You might want to get a cosmetic procedure like a brow lift or facelift in that case. However, the cosmetic surgeon might use the brow or eye lift in addition to using dermal fillers to achieve the look you are going for. There are also other types of fillers that might help with things dermal fillers can’t, such as soft tissue fillers. How They Work When you get dermal fillers, you will have a few choices to make. First of all, you will choose between traditional, semi-permanent, or permanent fillers. Permanent fillers don’t usually last a lifetime, but they last considerably longer than traditional ones. The amount of time they last depends on the type of filler, your specific situation, your age, and other factors. Your cosmetic surgeon can provide you with an accurate estimate. There are also natural and synthetic fillers to choose from. While both are effective, the natural fillers tend to cause fewer risks than synthetic fillers. However, synthetic dermal fillers last a little longer. Risks to be Aware Of Dermal fillers should only be […]

6 Hair Coloring Mistakes You Need To Avoid

Coloring your own hair at home can be tricky, so it is possible to make a mistake or two along the way. If you want to dye your hair yourself, it is very important to be fully prepared and learn a few things about the coloring process first. Here are six common hair coloring mistakes you need to avoid making: Washing Your Hair Too Soon It is not a good idea to wash your hair right after you dye it. In fact, you should wait at least 48 hours before shampooing. The coloring process can dry out your hair, so you need to give the natural oils time to build up on your locks. Shampooing your hair too soon can also fade the color faster. Dying Your Hair Too Dark Dying your hair too dark can be just as bad as dying it too light. If the color is too dark for your skin tone, it can make you look too pale. The hair dye you choose shouldn’t be any darker than your eyebrows. If the color still ends up being too dark, you should wash your hair with clarifying shampoo. Staining Your Scalp If you have stains of dye on your scalp, it will be pretty obvious that you colored your hair at home. Luckily, you can avoid staining your skin by just applying petroleum jelly around your hairline.  Going Permanent Right Away Even if you are convinced you will look great with a new hair color, you should avoid going permanent immediately. If the color does not turn out the way you expect, it will be damaging and costly to remove it. Semi-permanent hair color is less harsh on your hair and a lot easier to remove. Keeping the Hair Dye on Too Long You should never keep the dye on your hair longer than recommended. If you do, you could dry out and damage your locks. Running Out of Hair Dye One box of hair dye might not be enough if you have very long or thick hair. To play it safe, you should purchase two boxes of dye at the school. Dying your hair at home can be a bit nerve-wracking at first, but it does not have to end in a disaster. However, if you end up making a mistake, you can always make an appointment at your local hair salon to get it fixed. […]
